Ever since I started writing films, my goal has always been to firmly plant trans and queer folks within film history in all the places we weren’t allowed to exist before. Trans people should be allowed to exist as action heroes, as the leads in romantic comedies, as Cronenbergian body horror nightmares, and in mind-bending sci-fi.

 

Again Again is my love letter to a film history and a small town culture that’s historically excluded us. I set out to make a film that lets trans women exist in a 90s micro budget indie film or allows two women to kiss in technicolor. A film where two queer women can go to a small town demolition derby or church without being hate-crimed or harassed for being gay.

 

I’m so proud to tell stories where trans people aren’t just an afterthought, not just the quirky best friend, not a vessel to be beaten and murdered so cis audiences can cry over our corpses, but fully fleshed out people whose characters are informed by their identity but not defined by it.

 

Again Again is a film about the mortifying fear of the unknown, the difficulty in loving another person when you can’t love yourself, and the strength it takes to drag yourself out of bed when the world around you feels like a constantly repeating cycle of garbage. But also there’s lots of cool time travel stuff and fun music and cars smashing into each other and pretty girls kissing so it’s not all doom and gloom.

 

I couldn’t have made this film without the incredible cast and crew we assembled, or without my dedicated audience who crowdfunded our $100k budget and have been bothering me every day for the last 3 years to see it.
